What Should Google’s UX Writers Team Need To Improve In The Google Products Landing Page?
UX writers write small and easy words that are called microcopy. Microcopy is an obvious and very important stuff for an interface design. So, the user can use the interface easily.
Herein, I will show you what Google’s UX writers should need to improve in the Google products landing page.
The screenshot 1 below is from the Google products landing page. In screenshot 1, I marked three microcopies A, B, and C.
A. “Shop what’s trending this holiday season,” wrote the UX writers. I think they can improve this. It could be “Shop what’s trending” simply as that. Because, “this holiday season” is extra talk.
Trending means trending. If “Shop what’s trending” this will be the microcopy, it will save users time. A user can take action more easily by this microcopy than the current copy. A user always wants trending stuff.
So, holiday trending or other trending seasons are not the matter here. The matter is a user needs a trending option, that’s it.
B. “A communication tool for people with speech impairments,” wrote the UX writers team. Surely, it needs improvement. It could be “Communication tool for impairments”.
Whereas, an interface used by only one user, not all the users together(so, don’t need to use “people”). After That, a helpless person can’t be a user of any kind of technology in general. That’s why the microcopy could be “Communication tool for impairments”. It is easier than the present one. While, the user could be the helpless person’s friends, family etcetera.
C. In the screenshot 1 has “C” marked. The marked area has a microcopy that says “Browse all products”. As a user, I always browse everything mostly. Everyone does, I do think. However, I want to see the Google products here.
In this case, the UX writers wrote “Browse all products” it does not seem to take action easily, but “See products” does(don’t need to use ‘all’, “products” the plural form is enough).
So, the microcopy could be “See products” not “Browse all products”.
The screenshot 2 below is from the Google products landing page. In screenshot 2, I marked the biggest “sustainable” word with the red color.
Google has an awesome UX writing team of course. In the screenshot 2 has a microcopy that is “Helping 1 billion people be more sustainable with Google”.
The ‘sustainable’ word here sounds rude. Instead, use the “durable” word. It’s a very soft and serviceable word of course.
So, the microcopy could be “Helping 1 billion people be more durable with Google”.
The screenshot 3 below is from the Google products landing page. In screenshot 3, I marked two microcopies A, and B.
A. In screenshot 3, a user can easily understand that it’s a video. The user can play the video if the user thinks. But, the microcopy “Watch the video” is so long!
When a user gets into this interface, the user already understands that it’s a video. The user can play the video if the user wants.
So, I think the microcopy could be just “Watch” or “Play”. In this situation “Watch the video” this microcopy is so long.
B. In the screenshot 3 has this microcopy “Our goal is to help make the sustainable choice an easier choice”. It’s a good microcopy.
However, this microcopy has the word ‘sustainable’. This word sounds rude and this is a big word for a microcopy.
Microcopy guarantees the easiest words to take action shortly.
Instead of the word ‘sustainable’, Google can use the word “durable”. Considering, it sounds soft and serviceable.
So, the microcopy could be “Our goal is to help make the durable choice an easier choice”.
The screenshot 4 below is from the Google products landing page. In screenshot 4, I marked the microcopy with the red color.
In screenshot 4, the microcopy has 11 words. The microcopy has a clear meaning to understand but it’s a big microcopy. In this interface, the heading is ‘Google for education’. It is very clear that this Google products interface is just for education invented by GOOGLE.
That is why I think Google’s UX writers team doesn’t need to mention the education matter for UX writing. Because the user already knows that this is Google’s products education section. So, this microcopy “Explore products built for education that help transform learning and teaching” is good but it could be better.
I have 3 better solutions to improve and make this microcopy easy to take action.
The 1st microcopy could be “Explore Google products, transform your learning and teaching”.
The 2nd microcopy could be “Explore Google products, you will learn and teach”.
The 3rd microcopy could be “Explore Google products, you learn and teach”.
